Over the past 10 weeks, 24 girls from Richmond Hill have participated in a nationwide nonprofit program called Girls on the Run. While training for a 5k, the girls in grades three through five, learned lessons which assist in the development of healthy lifestyles and self-respect. Practices were held twice weekly and included lessons and games which incorporated the training routine. The season finale 5k was held on May 15 at Savannah State University.
A total of 92 girls from Chatham and Bryan counties participated, along with their adult running partner and 30 volunteer coaches. Warm up for the event included a hair styling station, to allow the girls to share their own unique style at the event.
Chants and cheers could be heard as the girls ran, hopped, skipped their way across the finish line on the 50-yard line of Tiger Arena track.
The event was a celebration of discovery for each girl to challenge herself, to learn a bit about who they each are as unique individuals and to learn that anything is possible.
Girls on the Run has sessions held in both the spring and fall, for girls ages 8-10. For more information: www.girlsontherun-ga.org
