REDSKINS at EAST LAURENS
Bryan County Coach Cherard Freeman is not into moral victories, but while the Redskins were on the short end of a 22-0 score at Class A powerhouse Lincoln County last week the Redskins coach came away feeling good about his team’s prospects.
In Freeman’s eyes his team showed its season-opening 38-12 win over Butler to snap a 24-game losing streak was not a fluke.
“It was a good showing for Bryan County,” said Freeman of his team’s performance. “To go into a place like Lincoln County and play as well as we did was very encouraging.
“Our defense played good,” Freeman said. “We made three mistakes and all three resulted in touchdowns.
“Offensively we couldn’t get anything going but there were a lot of bright spots.”
The Redskins (1-1) will be looking to get back on the winning track Friday night at East Laurens (1-1) which is coming off a playoff season and knocked off Twiggs County, 70-7 in its opener before losing 7-0 last week to Johnson County.
Bryan County was down 22 players in its opener and was missing another 18 at Lincoln County and it showed up in the fourth quarter at Lincoln County which led 8-0 at the half and then scored twice in the fourth quarter to break it open.
“You lose but I feel if we had a complete roster, we would have had a chance,” Freeman said. “In the fourth quarter we got tired. I told them after the game to not walk out of there with their heads down.”
Sean Kelly Hill was singled out by Freeman for turning in a yeoman’s performance.
Hill doubled up at quarterback and defensive back and played the entire game.
“He didn’t come out for a single snap,” Freeman said. “I can’t say enough about that.”
WILDCATS AT BURKE COUNTY
Richmond Hill was idle last week and then looked to be without a game this week when Wayne County had to pull out of their scheduled game due to COVID.
After a few telephone calls the Wildcats (0-1) were back on track as they will go to Burke County on Friday night with what Coach Matt LeZotte hopes will be a full squad.
Richmond Hill was missing 54 players when it opened its season at Beaufort, S.C., two weeks ago.
This is the third shot at playing Burke County. The two teams were scheduled to meet last week only to have Burke schools shut down for two weeks.
Both teams had an open date on Sept. 10 so they scheduled for that night.
Then came Wayne’s issues.
Burke had an open date this week so the two teams were able to get back on track.
What that means, of course, is that the Wildcats will be off again next week.
If healthy, Friday’s game will mark the anticipated debut of junior quarterback Ty Goldrick who was unable to go against Beaufort.
