It was back on the road Tuesday for the BCHS Lady Redskins as they traveled to Millen to play the Jenkins County Eagles. Their first meeting against each other this season left the Lady Skins down by one run and gave them their first loss of the year with a game ending score of 4-3. The Lady Eagles controlled much of that game taking an early single run lead that held throughout the game.

This time around, the Lady Eagles fought a completely different team as the Skins have emerged lately into a team with control and purpose. Some fine tuning to the lineup by Coach Covington and her assistant coaches has made a big difference on the score board. Consistent hitting and a defense that commits fewer errors was all the Ladyskins needed to take the 7-3 win over the Eagles.

The Lady Skins took an early lead in the first inning as senior Lindsay Seger slammed a line drive single to right field. She was followed by freshman Bridgett Bacon who slammed a ground ball double that zoomed past the Eagles infield and into left field. Freshman Samantha Howard put the ball into play allowing Seger to score and giving her the RBI. The first inning ended with a single run lead for the Lady Skins that held throughout the third inning.

Samantha Howard was first up for the Ladyskins in the fourth inning and once again Howard, who leads the Lady Skins in batting, put the bat on the ball for a solid line drive triple to right field. Senior Tara Miles would gain an RBI when her fielder’s choice scored Howard and gave the Lady Skins a two run lead. The Ladyskins battled through the next half of the inning as the Lady Eagles loaded the bases with the first two batters reaching base on a Redskin throwing error and a batter that was hit by a pitch. Two hits and a walk later, with the bases still loaded and the score tied, the Ladyskin defense shut down the Lady Eagles and saved the inning having only given up two runs.

Batting wise, the Lady Skins would start with starting pitcher and senior Ashley Barfield at the plate. Barfield nailed the first pitch into centerfield for a line drive single. Lindsay Seger, next at bat, moved Barfield into scoring position on a ground ball single down the left field line. Bridgett Bacon, next up to bat, slammed a fly ball to right field but not before Seger was called out on interference as she slid back to first base, trying to avoid a possible double play as Bacon’s hit sailed over the first baseman’s glove. The ball continued into the outfield but Seger’s slid was deemed responsible for causing the first baseman to miss the catch.

With two runners on, Senior Tara Miles drilled a double into right field on her second pitch scoring Howard and Bacon and give her two more RBIs. The Lady Skins ended their batting streak with a two-run lead. The Lady Eagles would come right back with lead-off batter Mackenzie Walker hitting a single into right field. The next Jenkins County batter slammed the ball down the left field line on a broken bat single. A passed ball would advance the runners on to second and third. A fielder’s choice made by senior third baseman Tara Miles at home plate would save the potential run, but Jenkins County would score one more run before the Skins could shut them out. The score held through the sixth inning with the Lady Skins up by one run.

In the top of the seventh inning, Bridgett Bacon would once again reach first on a single followed by Samantha Howard who took a walk. With two runners on base, Tara Miles came to the plate. With two strikes against her, Miles slammed a seldom seen over-the-fence homerun that would give the her a total of six RBIs for the game. The Lady Eagles could not recover and the game ended with the Redskins up 7-3.

The win puts the Lady Skins into third place in the region behind first place Savannah Country Day and second place Calvary. With Thursday off, the Lady Skins are taking the practice field for the meeting against Savannah Country Day in Pembroke on Tuesday of next week. Then it is on to Richmond Hill for their second meeting with the non-region Lady Wildcats on Wednesday and onto Claxton Thursday to play the Lady Tigers.
