In a world that is struggling to say the least it is good to know there is Someone who is still in charge and knows how to straighten the world out. That Person is God. In His wisdom He gave man a book to show man how-to live-in order to make life really good. That book is the Bible.

Now the Bible is divided into the Old and New Testaments and today man lives under the New Testament. That does not mean the Old Testament is useless for it serves as an example for man (Rom. 15:4). There is a chapter in the book of Psalms that talks about the commandments of God and shows how man should look at God’s word.

In Psalm 19 he writes of the gloriousness of God’s law seen both in nature and in His word. He begins in the first six verses by talking of the magnificence of God’s creation and how it shouts out the existence of a Supreme Being and that being God. The sun, moon and stars declare His handiwork. The laws of nature that God has set baffle the mind of man. Without a word said, nature tells all of God. The earth is heated, cooled and watered without man’s help. The sun travels in its circuit giving warmth to the entire world. Life is sustained by God. Peter wrote, “But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men” (2 Peter 3:7).

Beginning in verse 7 the Psalmist begins to speak of God’s word. He states, “The law of the Lord is perfect; the testimony of the Lord is sure; the statutes of the Lord are right; the commandments of the Lord are pure; the fear of the Lord is clean; and the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous.”

The “law of the Lord is perfect.” God’s word is able to turn a person away from sin and bring them to God. Just as God’s laws of nature testify to man’s need for God, God’s law of pardon testify to the need of a Saviour which God has provided. Those under the Old Law in which David lived had to look forward to the coming of that Saviour, but we who live under the Law of Christ look back to what has been done for us. God’s law is complete for man.

The “testimony of the Lord is sure.”

God’s word bears testimony to itself.

“Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness; In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;” (Titus 1:1,2). The will of God has been revealed to man down through time. It is dependable or sure. The “statutes of the Lord are right.” God’s word has been given to man at different times. In the beginning God spoke to the fathers, this is called the Patriarch age; later God gave the first written law to man, the Law of Moses; and in these the last days He has spoken to man by His Son and that word is recorded for all mankind (Heb. 1:1,2; 2 Time 3:16,17).

So, from the text thus far it is seen that the word of God is perfect, sure, and right. Next week we will see more about this “Good Book”.
