It’s hard to fathom the depth of the pain and suffering of crime victims and families left behind. For Henry Nicholas, the experiences of his family after his sister was murdered inspired his mission to protect victims. A student at the University of California-Santa Barbara, Marsalee "Marsy" Nicholas died after being shot in 1983 by her ex-boyfriend, Kerry Conley.

In honor of the summer solstice (which was last Saturday, June 21st), here is a poem on the subject of the solstice and the invariable passage of time. Now if you’ll excuse me, I shall reapply my sunscreen for the third time today as I begin to water my mother’s plants in the backyard during this lovely record-breaking heat wave. As they say, blood is thicker than water...and Hawaiian Tropic.
