The uncertainty of life
pastor corner

One needs to comprehend the uncertainty of life. 2020 should have shown everyone that sometimes life does not always go like it is planned.

Many plans had to be canceled, many people died, school was stopped at the schoolhouse and many other things just went crazy. The Bible teaches about how life can be unexpected.

Some seem to live their life like they will never die. James wrote “Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanishes away” (James 4:14).

It does not matter what great plans one may lay for the future; death can come when it is least expected. People spend thousands of dollars trying to find youth. They exercise daily, watch their diet, stay away from harmful things, then when they least expect it, they die. So many who are more concerned with this life than they are of the one to come, and that is where the mistake is made. They failed to prepare for the future that was important.

A person can always improve their lives. They can get better jobs, make more money, live in a bigger house, have better friends. Society seeks the better life in these and other things.

While there is nothing wrong with a better job, making more money and having new friends, it can be a problem if that is all one lives for, without a thought of eternity. Here are a few suggestions for living a better life.

Realize the value of souls. In Matthew 18 Jesus tells of the shepherd that has a lost sheep and how he goes to retrieve the lamb. Then He said, “Even so it is not the will of your Father which is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish” (Mat 18:14). To God every soul is important. All mankind needs to realize just how important the soul is and work to prepare for eternity.

God has blessed man with the time to prepare for eternal life. It is up to each person to take advantage of this blessing. It is easy to get caught up in all the cares of life.

It takes a constant effort to keep one’s mind on the goal of heaven. That is probably why there are so many warnings against worldliness in God’s word.

Preparing should take on the atmosphere of the occasions when one prepares to take a journey here. One must make sure everything is taken care of and have a feeling of excitement about the upcoming trip. One should have an even greater excitement about heaven.

Paul spoke of it in this manner, “For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better…” (Phil 1:23). Paul wanted to go to heaven, but he knew he had a job to do with the lost.

If one is truly preparing for eternity, to live with God throughout eternity they will have a better life here on earth. Turn to God, study His word, and obey His word. Believe in Jesus as God’s Son, repent of sins, confess Jesus as God’s Son, be baptized for the remission of sins, then remain faithful to God. Remember life is uncertain.
