Teach your children of the Lord
pastor corner

Parents want their children well prepared to go out into the world. Billions of dollars are spent each year for education so young people can have the best education possible.

This is the way it ought to be, for our children of today will be our leaders of tomorrow. Yet, while getting a good education is important we must not forget their spiritual training.

Spiritual training needs to be a vital part of our lives as well as the lives of our children. Children need to know the truth of creation, the power of God and his great love.

God wanted his people in the Old Testament to make sure their children knew of the care he had afforded their ancestors. “And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up” (Deut. 6:5-8).

This idea continues in the New Testament that children are to know about God. “And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord” (Eph. 6:4). Th s training needs to be done from the time a child is born.

Some parents get so busy worrying about, providing for and preparing children for life they forget to do what God has asked. The result of this can be seen in our society today. Surely it can be seen we must be concerned with what we are teaching our children.

Many children today are as Jesus said: “As sheep without a shepherd.” Children must be taught about God. They need to be told of his great love for all mankind including them. They need to know about his willingness to send his only begotten Son to die for them (John 3:16). They need to know he is alive and well today.

Parents need to have God as the focal point of their life, and they need to show this to their children. If children see their parents not following God, not going to worship God, never putting God first in their lives, then the children will most likely not follow God.

If the parents have no time for God and have set this example before their children, the mold is being set and will soon harden. Children need to be taught from the time they come from their mother’s womb about God and his love. They need to see parents who spend time studying the Bible and seek to follow God according to that word.

Children are so precious. They are a blessing from God and they need training. This training will serve them well in their lives. Everyone needs to follow God and to teach their children to follow also.
