Throughout scripture we are told about the importance of remembering the goodness of God.
The children of Israel were delivered from slavery in Egypt after being in bondage for 400 years, including a miraculous crossing of the Red Sea and the destruction of the pursuing Egyptian army. Deuteronomy 6:12 says, “Then take care lest you forget the Lord, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.” If you read the stories of the Old Testament, it didn’t take them long to forget God’s faithful acts towards them.
If you are a Christian, you have your stories of God’s faithfulness, and we need to remember them. The most important thing the Lord has done for us is that He forgave us from our sins and has made a way for us to spend eternity in heaven. God has instituted a sacrament called communion that is meant to be a reminder of this sacrificial act by Jesus to make this possible.
In 1 Corinthians 11:24-25 Jesus is quoted as saying that we should partake of communion “in remembrance of me” or in remembrance of what (He) Jesus did for us by dying on the cross.
There are a couple of good reasons to remember God’s past faithfulness.
First, it gives us a great reason to give continual thanks to Him. Second, the next time we face issues, it gives us confidence that the same God who helped us other times is the same God who can help us this time.
