Dear Editor, I have some unfortunate news regarding the proposed coal plant in Washington County near Sandersville.  On April 8, the conglomerate of EMCs proposing the plant (Cobb EMC, Snapping Shoals EMC, Central EMC, and Washington EMC) known collectively as Power4Georgians announced that the final permits have been issued by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division.
The good news:  It is still possible to appeal the pollution permits for this plant if they allow excess pollution into the Ogeechee River.  Thanks to the amazing work of our members and supporters recent attempts at the legislature to remove citizens’ ability to appeal pollution permits were stopped.  Thank you!
Over the coming weeks, Ogeechee Riverkeeper will be reviewing the permits with our partners in Georgians for Smart Energy, independent experts and attorneys at GreenLaw and Southern Environmental Law Center.  We have 30-days from the time the final permits were issued to file an appeal of the permits.
It is our commitment to our supporters that we will conduct a thorough review of the potential impacts of this proposed coal plant on the Ogeechee River and our coast and fight to protect our families from toxic pollution, such as mercury from these plants.
