Letter to the editor: Memorial Health on freestanding ERs
Letter to the Editor generic

Editor:

Good people can disagree on important topics.

However, we will not allow things that are 100% false to be said about our efforts to bring ER care closer to our neighbors in Pooler and Richmond Hill.

Here are the facts about our two freestanding ERs:

- They will be open 24/7/365.

- They will be a department of Memorial Health, the only Level I Trauma Center in the area.

- They CANNOT turn away the uninsured or underinsured (not that we ever would).

- We follow the SAME standards and regulations as our main ER.

The legislation that paved the way for freestanding ERs in our community passed with a vote of 170 to 3. It is not every day that you see such bipartisan support around any issue.

We know that you have a better chance of surviving a medical emergency if you can get to an ER quickly. This is especially true for heart attacks, strokes and traumatic injuries.

We know that every minute a parent spends in their car taking their very sick kid to the ER can be stressful.

We know that an ER near a neighborhood can bring peace of mind and comfort 24/7.

The COVID-19 pandemic has put hospitals and healthcare workers in the spotlight, and they have performed remarkably. Now is not the time to look to limit access to care, especially quality emergency care.

Memorial Health looks forward to working with our friends and neighbors in Pooler and Richmond Hill to bring safe ER care closer to where they live.

Shayne George, CEO Memorial Health.
