The words of Jesus seem discouraging when He says in Matthew 7:13, “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.” 

The truth that He is getting at is that there is only one way to get to heaven and that is through accepting the forgiveness offered through the sacrificial death of Jesus.

He spoke directly about this in John 14:6, where He said, “no one comes to the Father except through me.”

These words are not meant to be discouraging because eternal life through Jesus is offered and available to each one of us who desire to possess it. 

We can’t blame God that there are only a “few”, because out of a spirit of love He provided a way so that anyone in the world could be saved. A very familiar verse in scripture reveals to us this truth. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

What makes the “many” a reality is the fact that many will reject this salvation offered through Jesus. We all are born with a free will to make our own choices and God will not force His way into our lives if we choose to reject Him.

My appeal to you today is to choose Jesus.
