Editor’s Corner: Proust Q+A
Andrea Gutierrez new

Editor’s Note: Long-time subscriber and BCN columnist Lesley Francis suggested that a Proust questionnaire would be a great way to let readers get to know me a bit better. After quickly googling ‘what is a Proust questionnaire’, I’ve decided that I’d like to try it! I do love talking about myself, just as long as I’m not in front of a live studio audience.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Reading a good book outside at Forsyth Park on a warm spring afternoon.

Which one material possession would you save in the event of a fire (assuming your family was safe?)

My high school class ring!

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

“Never be so polite, you forget your power / Never wield such power, you forget to be polite.” (From singer-songwriter Taylor Swift, in her song “Marjorie”).

What is your favorite thing about yourself?

I don’t take myself too seriously–life is too short to act like Regina George (unless your name is Reneé Rapp, of course!)

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I wish that I were more assertive.

What is your greatest regret?

Not studying abroad in college. I had plans to study in Brazil as part of my Portuguese minor with UGA’s Flagship program, but COVID-19 got in the way and I just didn’t think it was worth it to upend my class schedule even more and graduate a semester or two late just because I wanted to go travel.

What real or fictional person do you most identify with?

Real person: America Ferrera, Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actress.

Fictional person: Chidi Anagonye from ‘The Good Place’.

What is your greatest fear?

Dying alone–with no family or friends around me.

What is your greatest extravagance?

Perfumes! If I could, I would spend my whole paycheck on sweet scents. My go-to fragrance at the moment is Burberry’s “Her”--I wear it pretty much every day.

Who are your favorite writers?

Lately, I’ve been reading anything by Isabel Allende–I recently finished her memoir ‘The Soul of a Woman’ earlier this month. I also enjoy works by Joan Didion, Clarice Lispector, and Shirley Jackson.

In poetry, I like the poems of Edna St. Vincent Millay and Elizabeth Bishop.

What trait(s) do you most deplore in others?

People who say they “don’t like reading”, conspiracy theorists, xenophobia.

What trait(s) do you most deplore in yourself?

My sulkiness when plans don’t go my way, my wallflower nature, and my inability to apply eyeliner correctly.

Where would you most like to live?

In a chic, loft-style apartment in the heart of Panama City, Panamá.

What talent would you most like to have?

I wish I could play bass guitar! That way I can follow my college freshman dream of starting an indie rock band.
