Editor's Corner: Candles
Andrea Gutierrez new

Note from the editorial staff (which is just one person, managing editor Andrea Gutierrez, but writing in third person): If you’re reading this column, today is most likely Thursday, July 17th, which is the day after the managing editor’s birthday. A day that should be a national holiday, much like Thanksgiving or April Fools’ Day, but alas, our humble editor will settle for a paid day off.

In all seriousness, the editor is pleased to celebrate another year of life on Earth with her family, friends, and faithful column readers. In lieu of a topical poem, the editor has picked out a particular poem to share with the readership, one that is a personal favorite of hers.

The managing editor will return to work on Friday, July 18th, with all the love and support from family, friends, and chocolate cake from Publix. (Because you can’t have candles without birthday cake!)

First Fig, Edna St. Vincent Millay

My candle burns at both ends; It will not last the night; But ah, my foes, and oh, my friends— It gives a lovely light!

The Column B-Side

In honor of British rock band Oasis and their summer ‘25 reunion tour, here is a cut of their lyrics to the song “Some Might Say”, which is one of my favorite songs by them.

Some Might Say Oasis

Go and tell it to the man who cannot shine Some might say that we should never ponder On our thoughts today ‘cause they hold sway over time Some might say we will find a brighter day Some might say we will find a brighter day ‘Cause I’ve been standing at the station In need of education in the rain You made no preparation For my reputation once again The sink is full of fishes She’s got dirty dishes on the brain It was overflowing gently But it’s all elementary my friend Some might say they don’t believe in heaven Go and tell it to the man who lives in hell Some might say you get what you’ve been given If you don’t get yours I won’t get mine as well Some might say we will find a brighter day Some might say we will find a brighter day ‘Cause I’ve been standing at the station In need of education in the rain That made no preparation For my reputation once again The sink is full of fishes She’s got dirty dishes on the brain And my dog’s been itching Itching in the kitchen once again
