I have a confession to make… I am not from coastal Georgia. Where I grew up the most annoying part of the beautiful spring and hot summer days were the gnats. They would fly in your ears, eyes, and just generally bother the stew out of you! Well, what I (and most of you) wouldn’t give to trade our biting variety for their non-biting cousins. Sadly, life doesn’t work that way and we must make do with what we have.

In honor of the summer solstice (which was last Saturday, June 21st), here is a poem on the subject of the solstice and the invariable passage of time. Now if you’ll excuse me, I shall reapply my sunscreen for the third time today as I begin to water my mother’s plants in the backyard during this lovely record-breaking heat wave. As they say, blood is thicker than water...and Hawaiian Tropic.
