Yoga Relay to benefit family caregivers

The third annual Yoga Relay is set for 5:30 p.m. Aug. 24 at Service Brewing Company in Savannah. The event benefits the Edel Caregiver Institute, a program of not-for-profit Hospice Savannah.

Relay coordinator Kate Doran is the owner of Savannah Power Yoga and SPRY Mind & Body. At age 41, she found herself as the working caregiver for her mother-in-law.

“Like me, no family caregiver is ever prepared for a life-changing diagnosis like cancer, or for the journey that lies ahead. Most caregivers are thrust into their role unexpectedly, with little or no training, support or advice,” Doran said. “Stressed and overwhelmed by the 24/7 nature of their responsibilities, caregivers like me often neglect their own health and wellbeing, leaving them less able to care for their loved ones.”

She said that proceeds from the Yoga Relay benefit the Edel Caregiver Institute, where caregivers can learn basic skills like wound care and use of durable medical equipment; learn about the special needs of someone with dementia; get counseling and referrals to helpful resources; get in-home coaching or have a physician “sherpa” come with them on a medical visit, and more.

She noted that thanks to community support, these services are free to any caregiver, regardless of whether their loved one is cared for by hospice.

The Yoga Relay consists of 100 sun salutations, which can be completed by individuals or teams. Registration is $30 and includes one drink ticket at the brewery and a swag bag. Yoga begins promptly at 6 p.m. and the silent auction closes at 8:30 p.m.

Music will be provided by City Hotel and wood fired pizzas by Big Bon Pizza will be available for purchase. Green Frog Sleep Center is the major event sponsor.
