Voters renew ESPLOST
Bryan County Schools

Voters have unofficially said yes to renewing Bryan County Schools' 1 cent sales tax for education, this time by a 1,531 to 381 margin.

Results are unofficial until certified by the state.

School officials hope to collect some $60 million over the life of the five-year sales tax, commonly referred to as ESPLOST -- short for Education Local Option Sales Tax.

Turnout was low throughout early voting and on election day Tuesday, Nov. 2, with only 5.41 percent of the county's  35,351 registered voters casting ballots. Of those, 1,046 of them voted on election day, according to Bryan County Elections Supervisor Cindy Reynolds.
