Tornado fatality identified

Bryan County Coroner Bill Cox identified the victim in the April 5 tornado as Belinda Thompson, 66, of Ellabell. She was a retired practical nurse from Florida.

According to her obituary, Thompson “was a member of Compassion Christian Church in Savannah and she was a member of the Christian Motorcycle Association. She was living her best times of her retirement caring for her great-grandson and living life to the fullest with her husband Calvin.”

A dozen people were injured in the tornado, which traveled 11 miles through North Bryan, according to the National Weather Service, which estimates the tornado at its max width was 1,300 yards wide and had peak winds of more than 165 mph as it moved in a northeast direction from Pembroke to Black Creek.

Officials say it was either a high EF3 or low EF4 tornado.

GeorgiaForward has announced that the 2025 Youth Placemaking Grant has been presented to the City of Pembroke Mayor’s Youth Council. The $500 grant, awarded to the city, will support a youth-led public placemaking project designed to foster creativity, community connection, and civic pride among young residents.
