C-SPAN’s campaign tour bus will visit Bryan County Middle School on Oct. 28, it was announced Thursday.
Social Studies teacher Katherine Ferreira said she attended a state social studies conference along with the rest of the social studies department where she was able to tour the bus and learn about the resources available to teachers through C-SPAN.
“The bus is fantastic. It has all kind of resources for teachers and students, including video editing. When I went to the web-site to sign up for resource information, there was a box where I signed up showing my interest in having the bus come,” she said.
“I thought at first when they contacted me saying they would be in the Savannah area and asking if we were still interested that we would have take a field trip to Savannah, but they are coming directly to our school. The field trip is coming to us,” Ferreira said.
The tour was originally supposed to be for a half day, she said, but when the high school heard the bus was coming they got excited too, so she contacted C-SPAN representative Tamera Robinson, who agreed they could stay for both schools to experience the bus and the opportunities it provides.
Julie Howard, curriculum resources teacher for the school said, “Everybody is very excited about the bus coming and the opportunities for the students and teachers to learn from it.”
Ferreira said the bus is designed for social studies but feels what they learn will be able to be applied across the curriculum and not just social studies.
“I was thrilled. I think it is such a great opportunity for the students,” she said.
Groups of students and teachers will have the opportunity to tour the bus and learn about C-SPAN while teachers will get a chance to use C-SPAN resources in the classroom, according to the school.
