SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — A Savannah woman shot and wounded her 11-year-old daughter as she slept in her bed Monday morning, police said.

Savannah-Chatham County Police spokeswoman Judy Pal said investigators do not believe the shooting was an accident.

"We believe that she purposely shot her daughter," said Pal, who declined to give a suspected motive or supply other details.

The girl was being treated at Memorial Health University Medical Center. Her condition was not immediately available.

Pal said the victim's mother had not been charged and was being assessed by doctors, but declined to be more specific. She said the mother was not injured.

The mother and daughter were the only people in their house, where police recovered a handgun, Pal said.

A neighbor called police early Monday saying she thought a burglar had been shot inside the woman's home, she said.

"I don't know if she called because she heard the gunshot or because the mother was screaming," Pal said. "But it turns out it was actually her daughter that was shot while the girl was sleeping."

Police did not immediately release the names of the victim or her mother.
