Deal kicks off barnstorming tour

ATLANTA — Former U.S. Rep. Nathan Deal kicked off a seven-city barnstorming tour in Atlanta, vowing to be the only Republican who can defeat Democrat Roy Barnes in November.

Deal is set to hit seven cities from Gainesville to Albany Monday in a frenzied fly-around on the eve of the runoff election that pits him against Karen Handel, the former Georgia secretary of state.

Deal said he was the best candidate to avoid defections to the Democratic Party during the general election. He said he's the candidate focused on "vision, not on vengeance."

Meanwhile, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is set to stump for Handel Monday at a rally.

Palin stumps for Handel on eve of GOP runoff

ATLANTA — Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin swept into Georgia, headlining a get-out-the-vote rally for Karen Handel on the eve of Georgia's hotly contested Republican runoff for governor.

Palin and Handel entered a crowded Atlanta hotel ballroom on Tuesday to the strains of Twisted Swister's "We're Not Gonna Take It" and chants of "Sa-rah!"

Palin called the runoff race "epic" and said the nation is watching to see if Georgia is ready to elect Handel and "get rid of that good ol' boy network."

"Georgia, are you ready to bring it on?" Palin asked to cheers.

Handel and former U.S. Rep. Nathan Deal are locked in what appears to be a tight race for the GOP nomination for governor. The winner faces Democrat Roy Barnes in November.

Deal was barnstorming on Monday, hitting seven cities from Gainesville to Albany.
