SAVANNAH — Savannah police say they handed out citations to 16 bar employees during the city's bustling St. Patrick's Day celebration last week, mostly for allegations of selling alcohol to people under age 21.

Police said Wednesday they checked 56 bars in the city's most popular downtown nightlife districts and found only 12 where workers were breaking the law.

Four workers were cited for allowing revelers under 21 into the bars. The others got written up for selling booze to underage party goers.

While the citations went to individual employees, the businesses will be evaluated by local officials to determine whether they should face any potential disciplinary action.

Tens of thousands of visitors jammed Savannah to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. While the parade was Thursday, the sprawling street party lasted through Saturday.
