Long County authorities have apprehended a suspect in connection with a Sunday morning meth lab explosion and fire in Ludowici.
According to Ludowici Police Department Investigator Sal Genualdi, Kal Alexander, 60, of Ludowici, was arrested late Sunday for allegedly manufacturing the illegal drug. The investigator said that after a reported structure fire on McDonald and Thornton streets was extinguished, authorities found evidence linking Alexander to the apparent methamphetamine-manufacturing operation. He was then arrested.
Multi-Agency Crack Enforcement Drug Task Force Commander Capt. Chris Reid said it appeared Alexander was producing the drug for himself, and there were no indicators he intended to distribute it.
Reid said that Alexander was charged with manufacturing methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine within 1,000 feet of a school, possession of tools to commit a crime and possession of marijuana.
After first responders discovered the lab, three firefighters were examined at a hospital because of concerns regarding their exposure to toxic components used in making the illegal substance. Ludowici/Long County Fire Department Chief Darrell Ballance said the firefighters were not injured.
Alexander, who is in custody, leased the building where the incident occurred.
