A hitchhiker was killed Wednesday morning in Riceboro as he was sleeping on a dirt road near Montague Street, according to the Georgia State Patrol.
 GSP Trooper William Bowman said the 36-year-old unidentified West Virginia man reportedly was hitchhiking with two friends to Florida on Tuesday evening. When the men could not catch a ride south on Interstate 95 near Riceboro, they decided to bed down for the evening on a gated dirt road by Montague Street, near interstate exit 67. 
The men, according to Bowman, found a carpet and used it to cover themselves in the middle of the road. At around 10 a.m. Wednesday morning, a water meter reader, Charles Floyd, 40, who is employed by Woodrow Sapp Water Management Company in Brunswick, drove his Ford F-250 pickup down the road to read several meters. Floyd told the trooper that he saw the carpet in the middle of the road and drove around it on the left side, partially in the
grass. 
After reading the meters, Floyd said he drove back down the road and passed the carpet on the right-hand side. As he neared the end of the road, two of the men who were under the carpet caught up to Floyd and reportedly told him that he had run over their friend, who was unresponsive, Bowman said. 
Floyd called 911, and Riceboro fire and rescue units, EMS personnel and sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the road. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.  Bowman, who is leading the investigation, said there are no charges pending.
“It was an unfortunate accident from all indications,” he said.
