DARIEN - Firefighters have been battling a 500-acre brush fire off Highwau 17, just north of Darien in McIntosh County.

Firefighters from Glynn and Long counties and the Georgia Forestry Commission helped fight the fire that began Sunday.

Wendy Burnett, a spokeswoman for the Georgia Forestry Commission, said Monday that the fire was about 95 percent contained.

She says an unoccupied house was destroyed by the fire and three other buildings were damaged.

About 80 people were evacuated by police. The American Red Cross in McIntosh County, with assistance from Glynn, Liberty and Tattnall counties, opened an aid station at McIntosh County High School.
