ATLANTA  — The Georgia Senate majority announced the unanimous nomination of Sen. Tommie Williams, R-Lyons, for president pro tempore during the Republican caucus elections last Friday. The nomination will go for a vote before the full Senate when the General Assembly convenes Jan. 11. The president pro tempore is the second highest-ranking position in the Senate.
“I am eager to get to work with my colleagues both old and new. We have many tough decisions to make in order to balance the budget, improve our economy and provide essential programs and services for all Georgians,” Williams said. “I’m honored and humbled to have once again been nominated to lead this distinguished body. I look forward to working closely with all members of the General Assembly and our new governor to ensure Georgia is on the right path to success.”
Williams was first elected to the General Assembly in 1998 and will be serving his second term as president pro tempore. Other members of the leadership team include Sen. Chip Rogers, R-Woodstock, who was re-elected as majority leader, and Sens. Bill Cowsert, R-Athens, and Greg Goggans, R-Douglas, as caucus chairman and caucus secretary, respectively.
Sen. Cecil Staton, R-Macon, was elected majority whip and Sen. David Shafer, R-Duluth, was elected caucus vice chairman.
