ATLANTA — Sen. Earl “Buddy” Carter, R-Pooler, has been appointed chairman of the Senate Higher Education Committee for the 2011-12 term by the Committee on Assignments. Carter replaces Sen. Jim Butterworth, who resigned his seat Oct. 2 to lead the Georgia National Guard.
“The road to higher education can be complex, but the rewards are immense. It is critical for Georgia to remain a state where higher education opportunities are not just available, but viable,” Carter said. “It is a great privilege to be appointed to this position and, as chairman, I look forward to working with administrators and students statewide.”
Added President Pro Tempore Tommie Williams: “I am confident that Sen. Carter will work diligently to support higher education in Georgia. For decades, we have earned the esteemed reputation for providing an exceptional education for Georgia students as well as students around the world.
“Sen. Carter has demonstrated remarkable dedication to our state throughout his time in public service. I look forward to seeing our higher education system grow and prosper as he works closely with the Board of Regents to ensure success for the higher education system throughout
Georgia.”
The Senate Higher Education Committee reviews legislation influencing the University System of Georgia, universities, colleges, postsecondary education and student financial aid.
In 2011, the committee evaluated the HOPE scholarship program to ensure its survival. As a result, reform legislation was passed to annually adjust awards based on lottery revenues and ultimately uphold the merit-based scholarship program.
