Halloween celebrations are in full swing in Bryan County as dozens of children are ready to collect as many sweet treats as they can during their trick-or-treating tonight.
But safety will no doubt be top priority for many families as their kids navigate food allergies and road safety during all the fun.
Dr. Blaine Crosland with SouthCoast Health in Richmond Hill reminds kids and parents to watch out for potential allergens in their candy before eating and sharing with others.
“For our young patients, we encourage parents to be in charge of the candy and not let the kids eat any candy until they’ve investigated it,” Dr. Crosland said.
“And for the older kids, who have the ability to understand their allergies, making sure they know what their allergies are, and how to read and review the [candy] labels before.”
For trick-or-treating, Dr. Crosland recommends parents having routes planned before taking their children out to get candy. Parents should also make sure their child’s costume is visible at night.
“We worry about them getting hit if they get separated and start wandering in the road,” Dr. Crosland said. “Do try to ensure that they stay in well-lit areas to avoid any sort of accident.”
