Smoke from a wildfire on Fort Stewart is currently affecting Pembroke and also may affect Hwys. 280 and 204.
The fire is burning in Fort Stewart’s artillery impact area in the center of the training area.Fort Stewart firefighters from the post's Forestry Service are containing the fire, but aren't actively fighting it because of dangers posed by unexploded shells, Fort Stewart spokesman Kevin Larson said.

The fire will continue to burn until rainfall puts it out, according to a press release. Significant rainfall is not expected within the next five to seven days.
Weather conditions are very favorable for wildfire at this time and those who are smoke sensitive should take actions necessary to protect themselves from the effects of the smoke, Larson said. He asked that drivers exercise caution while driving on highways where visibility is limited because of smoke.
