Richmond Hill had a proverbial mess on its hands Wednesday afternoon when more than 200,000 gallons of sewage spilled and closed Harris Trail Road.
According to a press release from city hall, “An estimated 215,000 gallons of sewage spilled from a ruptured sewer force main at the intersection of Harris Trail Road and Osprey Drive” around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The release states that when city workers responded to the area, they found sewage had crossed Harris Trail Road and flowed into “a roadside drainage ditch that drains into Sterling Creek.”
“The sewage spill was treated with lime, and the spill was neutralized.”
Traffic was closed or limited for about eight hours along Harris Trail while the force main was repaired.
