Festival is well underway
Preparations for the Great Ogeechee Seafood Festival are well underway, with less than two weeks until the opening ceremony at J.F. Gregory Park.
The festival will kickoff on Friday, Oct. 19, at 5 p.m.
Community Development’s Jan Bass is this year’s military liaison, because of her prior service experience with the 3rd Infantry, she said.
“I think everything is going along quite smoothly, I think you perfect it after a few years,” Bass said. “Lieutenant Colonel Gale will be providing opening remarks at the opening ceremony, and we will have a color guard representing the 3rd Infantry division, and we’ll also be having the flag pole dedication just before the opening ceremony.”
Janet Thayer, chair for the festival, said everything is finally starting to come down to the wire.
“Everything’s underway,” Thayer said. “We’ve got everything on schedule – the entertainment’s all lined up, the carnival is coming, the car show will be here, and we will have lots and lots of seafood. This year we’ll have more seafood than ever before.”
The carnival will also be holding an event on Friday, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., for special needs children, “out of the goodness of their hearts,” Thayer said, noting this is the second year the carnival has provided it.
Thayer said Coastal Boating and Lowcountry Choppers will have displays, as well as numerous arts and crafts and 26 local business booths, among many others. Headline performers include 1980s rock band Survivor and Southeast favorite The Swinging Medallions.
After Friday’s kickoff of events and entertainment, festivities will start up again at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning. Thayer said Saturday will include all the local events from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., including school bands and cheerleaders. Sunday will conclude the festival with more entertainment in the afternoon.
“And everything will be the same as last year as far as parking, and the shuttles will run as normal,” she said.
“We’re right on track, and we are ready!” said Richmond Hill Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Kitty Franklin.
