Residents can make their mark on Pembroke
Art contest will help decorate Welcome Center

The Pembroke Downtown Development Authority is asking residents to make their mark on the city’s Welcome Center with an art contest that will help decorate the newly renovated office space with photographs, drawing and paintings of Pembroke.

Contest categories include: historical photographs; drawings/paintings; photographs; and entries from artists 12 years and under. Winners will receive a cash prize and a write up in the monthly newsletter. Winning artwork will also be on permanent display in the Welcome Center.

To enter email name, contact info and competition category to betterhometown@pembrokega.net. All artwork is due at the Welcome Center by Sept. 28 and will remain on display until winners are announced during the Welcome Center ribbon cutting on Oct. 5.

Bryan County Commissioners on Tuesday night deferred a decision on whether to rezone some 3.8 acres near the historic Burnt Church Cemetery to allow a Parker’s Kitchen convenience store. The vote to defer the decision for 30 days to look into concerns raised by opponents to the project came after several residents – including parents of children buried in the 195-year-old cemetery – urged commissioners to deny the rezoning.
