Soldier missing off St. Simons

A soldier from 3rd Infantry Division went missing off the coast of St. Simons Island while swimming Sunday, according to a news release from Fort Stewart's Public Affairs Office.

The Coast Guard is continuing the search for the missing soldier.

Coast Guard Station Brunswick watchstanders received notification at approximately 5:20 p.m. The release said the soldier had gotten caught up in a rip current and swept out to sea.

The Coast Guard launched a boat rescue crew and Coast Guard Air Station Savannah launched an air rescue crew at approximately 5:28 p.m.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources is also assisting in the search.
