Murder suspect faces Feb. 13 court date

The first court appearance for Jeremiah Watkins — accused in the shooting death of his wife — will be Feb. 13.

Watkins is currently lodged in the Bryan County Jail and has been charged with felony murder.

According to the Richmond Hill Police Department, Breona Watkins, 29, was shot at Plantation Apartments in the early morning hours of Jan. 14. She was transported by EMS to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah, where she later died.

Jeremiah Watkins, 32, surrendered at the Hinesville Police Department later that day.

Court documents list him as having a Hinesville address.

According to the Bryan County Clerk’s Office, a motion for a bond hearing and a preliminary hearing was entered Monday. The next available court date for Superior Court, which handles felony cases, is Feb. 13.

Felony murder in Georgia carries one of three possible sentences for a suspect who is found guilty: life in prison with parole, life in prison without parole or the death penalty.

Nuclear plant's safety discussed at meeting

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will discuss the 2017 safety performance of the Hatch Nuclear Power Plant during an open house from 4-6 p.m. April 24 in Room 171 of the Southeastern Technical College, 3001 East First St., Vidalia. The two-unit Hatch plant is located near Baxley, about 20 miles south of Vidalia, and is operated by Southern Nuclear Operating Co. NRC employees responsible for plant inspections, including the resident inspectors based full-time at the site, will be available to discuss its performance.
