A Midway man who accidentally shot himself early Wednesday morning died from his wound.
According to an incident report filed by Liberty County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Dennis Abbgy, Kirk Pierce of the Lake George subdivision was cleaning a weapon shortly after 1 a.m. when it accidentally discharged a round into his left leg.
When Abbgy arrived, a teenager led the deputy to his father, who was unconscious in a bedroom, where Pierce’s wife, Jennifer, attempted to stop the bleeding.
Jennifer Pierce said she heard gunfire while watching television in another room, and her husband called for her. When she entered the room, she said she found her husband holding his leg tightly. He told her to call 911.
Jennifer Pierce told Detective Brian Barnes, who was called to investigate the shooting, that Kirk Pierce passed out and fell to the floor as she and her son tried to stop the bleeding.
According to the report, Kirk Pierce was rushed to Liberty Regional Medical Center in Hinesville, where he later was pronounced dead.
Barnes said Pierce may have attempted to remove a round that had become jammed in the .45-caliber handgun he was cleaning.
