A man who was wanted in Bryan County on aggravated assault and methamphetamine charges was apprehended Monday by a team of specially trained Bulloch County sheriff’s deputies.
The Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office learned Sunday that James Rodney Shuman, 43, of Harveytown Road in Ellabell, was seen at a home on Highway 67, Bulloch County Sheriff Lynn Anderson said in a news release issued Monday.
“Based on the nature of the charges, patrol supervisors called on the services of the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Tactical Apprehension and Control Team to assist with the arrest,” he said.
The team, composed of deputies from other divisions, was reorganized in 2014, he said. It “focuses on high-risk warrant service and barricaded suspect operations.”
Shuman was not found, but the TAC team later learned that he had been spotted in a vehicle near Park Place Apartments in Statesboro.
When deputies stopped the vehicle, they captured Shuman as well as Robert Dillon Boyette, 20, of Park Place Apartments, both of whom resisted arrest, Anderson said.
Shuman had a pistol tucked into his waistband, and TAC members later found a methamphetamine lab in the Park Place Apartments unit where Shuman and Boyette were living, the sheriff said.
Both men were taken to the Bulloch County Jail, where they await court appearances.
Boyette is charged with felony obstruction, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, criminal attempt to manufacture methamphetamine and hindering the apprehension of a fugitive.
Shuman is charged with criminal attempt to manufacture methamphetamine, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, methamphetamine possession, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and wanted person.
The Bryan County warrant for Shuman’s arrest stems from a Jan. 14 incident in which authorities discovered a meth lab while responding to a call of shots being fired in a Pembroke residential area.
At that time, Shuman’s son, Tyler Shuman, was arrested at their Harveytown Road home, where deputies found the methamphetamine-manufacturing operation in Rodney Shuman’s  mother’s garage.
A deputy, who noticed the smell the lab was giving off, discovered the operation while conducting interviews relating to an earlier incident, during which Rodney Shuman reportedly pointed a pistol at his daughter-in-law, Blake Shuman.
She had tried to leave and reportedly was backing up when Rodney Shuman allegedly fired a pistol once, striking her vehicle. Blake Shuman was not injured. Rodney Shuman fled before authorities arrived.
Tyler Shuman has been charged with possession of methamphetamine and the possession of tools for the commission of a crime.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Southeastern Drug Task Force is investigating the alleged lab to determine what, exactly, was being manufactured.
