ATLANTA — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation will be releasing child abduction and other crime alerts on Twitter and Facebook accounts.

The GBI said that emergency information will be available through social media on Friday.

GBI spokesman John Bankhead said releasing the alerts through social media will help spread the word more quickly.

The agency also releases alerts through radio and television messages.

There are several different types of alerts. A Levi's Call alerts the public to child abduction, a Mattie's Call informs the public about a missing elderly or disabled person and a Kimberly's Call alerts the public when violent criminals are at large.

A Blue Alert notifies the public about a criminal who has killed or seriously injured an officer.
