One man was killed and another had to be flown by helicopter to a Savannah hospital Friday when the pickup they were in ran off the road and hit a tree on Ash Branch Church Road in Bulloch County, police said.

The passenger, Brandon Curl, 22, of Mill Creek Church Road in Black Creek, was killed in the crash. The driver, Paul Roberts, 25, of Ash Branch Church Road in southern Bulloch County, was flown by Air Evac to Memorial University Medical Center as a result of the crash, which occurred around 7:30 p.m. Friday, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

The wreck remains under investigation by the GSP’s Specialized Crash Reconstruction Team, but an initial accident report from the GSP says Roberts was driving a 2002 Silverado pickup truck north on Ash Branch Church Road when it went off the left side of the road.

Roberts reportedly steered back across both lanes and off the east shoulder of Ash Branch Church Road, where the pickup hit a tree head-on and caught fire, the GSP report says.

Roberts’ condition was unavailable.
