An Ellabell man is being charged with aggravated assault after reportedly stabbing another man 27 times early Saturday morning.

According to Detective Mickey Sands with the Bryan County Sheriff's Department, Jesse Neumans, 31, of Ellabell, stabbed Gary Watkins, 63, also of Ellabell, around 1 a.m. Saturday morning.

"(Neumans) is currently charged with aggravated assault, and probably (could face) other charges including robbery, but we won't know that until we talk to the victim," Sands said Wednesday.

Watkins is listed in stable condition and is recovering from surgeries, Sands said. Although heavily sedated, he is expected to survive, he said.

Sands said the investigation is ongoing but thinks Neumans went to Watkins' home with the intent to rob him or borrow money, which Sands said Watkins may likely have been refused.

"The investigation is on hold pending getting to speak with Mr. Watkins," he said.

Sands said Watkins called his landlord who lives nearby after the incident.

"He told her he needed help and she couldn't understand him very well but understood who it was," Sands said.

The landlord found Watkins and then called authorities, Sands said. Bryan County Sheriff's deputies and Bryan County EMS responded to the incident.

Neumans is currently being held in Bryan County jail. Sands said Neumans was on probation for robbery by sudden snatching. His probation will be revoked and he won't be released, he said.
