A fire early Thursday on Highway 84 in Midway left an elderly woman displaced as her home was destroyed.
Midway Volunteer Fire and Rescue Deputy Chief Joe Feinhals said the department received a call shortly after midnight of a structure fire in the 6000 block of East Oglethorpe Highway. When firefighters arrived the home was engulfed in flames, Feinhals said.
The fire appears to have started in the living room of the single-family, wood frame house. The woman lived alone.
According to Feinhals, high winds made the fire difficult to fight. Flames did spread into some nearby woods, endangering other structures, but they were contained.
No one was injured were reported. The Red Cross has been called to assist the woman. She is reported to be staying with nearby family.
