The court martial of Pvt. Isaac Aguigui began today at Fort Stewart with Judge (Col.) Andrew J. Glass presiding.

Aguigui is charged on one count of murder for the July 17, 2011, death of his wife, Sgt. Deidra Aguigui, and one count for the death of her unborn child.

Witnesses called by noon today include Aguigui’s friend, former Sgt. Michael Schaefer. Schaefer’s testimony was different than his sworn statements to the criminal investigative division agents and last year’s Article 32 hearing. He told government attorneys today he had not mentioned that Aguigui told him he had killed his wife because Aguigui told him he was helping him spend the insurance money he’d gotten and was therefore an accomplish to his crime.
