A portion of Richmond Hill’s main drag could become a drag for motorists later this month, when CSX Railroad begins working on train tracks on Ford Avenue near Plantation Lumber.

An announcement from Richmond Hill City Clerk Dawnne Greene noted a portion of Ford Avenue, also known as Highway 144, will be closed from 4 a.m. Sept. 26 through 6 p.m. Sept. 30, at the request of the railroad.

“Motorists will be able to access residences, businesses, and schools in the area up to the work zone, but traffic will not be allowed to cross through the work zone,” Greene said.

Additional details, including work zone maps and detour information, will be released once it’s finalized by the Georgia Department of Transportation and the railroad, she added.

An average of 23,200 vehicles a day were counted in 2021 that part of Ford Avenue, according to the GDOT traffic count. That’s actually down a bit since 2019, when the daily average was 25,500 vehicles.

It’s unclear if the slight decrease is due to the opening of the $19 million Belfast Keller Interchange, which opened in January 2021.
