New middle school ready for bid

The bad economy could mean good news for the Bryan County Board of Education, which is trying to save money and build a new school at the same time.

"There is no better time to bid work," said Craig Buckley, the architect behind the new Richmond Hill Middle School.

Buckley told BoE members at their October meeting that school construction in Statesboro and Stephens County is costing less than similar projects did in 2008.

"In Statesboro they’re building an elementary School for about $93 a square foot," he said. "A year and a half ago that would have cost $135. I haven’t seen prices like this in five or six years. Folks are starving out there."
