A broken pipe on Monday caused approximately 6,600 gallons of sewage to be discharged in the vicinity of 13741 Highway 144 near Sterling Creek, according to a press release Tuesday from the city of Richmond Hill.

The city called the incident a "minor wastewater discharge" and said it was reported to the EPD Coastal District in Brunswick. The cause was a "cracked sewer force main" and that the "broken segment of pipe was replaced."

Four thousand gallons of discharged water was recovered from the adjacent ditch and returned to the collection system for treatment, the city said. The affected area was neutralized with calcium hydroxide.
