Third Infantry Division deputy commander general-rear Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Phillips was nominated by the president of the United States for promotion to the rank of major general, according to a Department of Defense advisory released this week.
Phillips was out of town and could not be reached for comment.
If Phillips’ nomination is confirmed, he will be assigned to the position of assistant deputy chief of staff, (individual mobilization augmentee), G-1, mobilization and reserve affairs in Washington, D.C.
The general arrived at Fort Stewart/Hunter Army Airfield late last September, before the 3rd Infantry Division deployed to Iraq. Prior to his arrival at the installation, Phillips served as Deputy Chief of Public Affairs in Washington D.C., the same position 3rd ID Commander Maj. Gen. Tony Cucolo held before coming to Fort Stewart.
Phillips was commissioned in the regular Army as a second lieutenant of armor in 1979. According to www.stewart.army.mil, his service includes assignments in armor units in Germany, the U.S. and the Balkans. He commanded an M-1 Abrams tank company in the 2nd Armored Division, and in his 30 years on active and reserve duty has served in operational, communications and logistic staff positions from battalion through Army level.
