If your listen to a scanner and it goes crazy Thursday morning, it’s probably only a drill.

Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield will have an emergency response exercise involving an active shooter from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday. The exercise will be at Fort Stewart’s Sgt. First Class Paul R. Smith Army Education Center, according to Fort Stewart spokesman Kevin Larson.

The center will be closed during the exercise, and only those participating will be allowed inside. Traffic entering the education center parking lot will also be restricted to exercise participants only.

Drivers on Gen. Stewart Way, Gen. Screven Way and on other roads near the education center should be alert for increased emergency vehicle traffic during the exercise, Larson said.

Emergency radio traffic will occur during the exercise.

Larson said the training will test and validate the "readiness of the installation’s emergency service and emergency response personnel," in an email. "The exercise creates a learning environment for our personnel to use response plans, policies and procedures. Practicing for real-world scenarios ensures we will be ready to protect and serve our soldiers, families, Army civilian employees and the public if an emergency where to happen."
