A community-wide initiative is underway to raise money for the USO’s Operation Phone Home, which provides pre-paid phone cards to deployed military personnel to call loved ones while away from their families this holiday season.
“The small things make a big difference in the daily lives of the men and women of the armed forces,” said Mitchell Bush, president of USO of Georgia – Savannah, who launched the campaign “These phone cards serve as an indication that we’re not forgetting what our soldiers go through. It’s a great way to brighten their holidays.”
Members of the public are invited to join The Coastal Bank and the USO in connecting deployed soldiers from the Coastal Empire and the Lowcountry to their loved ones during the holidays. A $5 donation with a personalized message will provide a soldier with a phone card to call home. Cards will be given to deployed members of the U.S. Army, Army National Guard, Air National Guard, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Naval Reserve in December.
Members of the public can purchase a card online at www.phonehomesav.com or visit any of following Coastal Bank locations to make a donation to USO Operation Phone Home: 18 West Bryan St.; 412 Stephenson Ave.; 501 West Hwy. 80, Pooler; 140 Towne Center Blvd., Godley Station; 5799 Hwy. 21 South, Rincon; and 101 West Hendry St., Hinesville.
“This is a small but important way for us to express our thanks to our brave troops,” said Tom Wiley, chairman, president and CEO of The Coastal Bank. “We appreciate their selfless service to our nation and hope they will return home safely.”
The phone cards are distributed through USO centers both overseas and in the U.S. Since the program began, more than 2.2 million phone cards have been distributed.
“Although they deploy to dangerous areas, the biggest sacrifice our service members make is being separated from their family and friends,” said Steve Hart, public affairs officer at Hunter Army Airfield. “There’s no greater way to show gratitude to our service members than to give them a phone card, so that they can connect with their loved ones over the holidays.”
