The City of Richmond Hill paid tribute to those who died in service to the United States on Monday during its annual Memorial Day ceremony hosted at J.F. Gregory Park.

Mayor Russ Carpenter gave a welcome address, and a prayer invocation was given by Rev. Steve Lane of New Beginnings Community Church. Special guests included State Rep. Ron Stephens, Dan Awtrey of American Legion, Post 27, and Chris Shipman of Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).

State Rep. Stephens acknowledged in his remarks the grief and pain that Gold Star families go through, with many such families in attendance.

“It is significant that we understand that we’re here today to pay tribute to not only those who have lost their life and service to their country, but to those families that have to deal with this [grief] on a daily basis,” said Stephens.

The guest speaker was Command Sergeant Major Brian J. Webber, of the 603D Aviation Support Battalion. A native of Bangor, Maine, CSM Webber has held numerous leadership roles and assignments across the U.S. and overseas, including Korea, Iraq, and Afghanistan. He currently resides at Hunter Army Airfield, Georgia, with his wife and two children.

“Thank you for gathering here today as we pause to observe Memorial Day, a national day of remembrance, reflection, and gratitude,” said Webber.

“On this Memorial Day, let us remember the common bond we share with those who have gone before us…let us carry forward their legacy, not just in our words, but in our actions and commitment to one another as Americans.”

The customary laying of the wreath closed out the ceremony, followed by a 21-Gun salute from Fort Stewart’s 3rd ID CAB. Specialist Robert Dama of the 3ID Band performed “Taps” and Rev. Steve Lane offered a closing benediction.
