A wrongful death lawsuit against the city of Richmond Hill and one of its police officers was voluntarily dismissed Tuesday by the woman who filed it in February 2013.
Filed in Bryan County State Court by Laura Lane Maia, the suit stemmed from the April 5, 2011 suicide of Maia’s daughter, Sydney Sanders, a 14-year-old Richmond Hill High School freshman.
The suit claimed Sanders’ death was caused by misconduct from negligence and misconduct of Richmond Hill officials and Richmond Hill Police Department Cpl. Douglas Sahlberg, court documents show.
The suit said Sahlberg showed his daughter photographs of injuries caused during an earlier attempt at suicide by Sanders, leading to her suicide.
Maia, through attorney Carl Varnedo, reserved the right to refile the same action within six months, according to court documents.
