Hair salons and barber shops are usually closed on Mondays to make up for being open Saturdays, but A Posey Place is breaking tradition on July 25 for a good cause.

The salon, at 405 Harris Trail, will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. that day to give free haircuts for families in need.

“It’s a back-to-school thing for families who might not be able to afford haircuts,” said Michelle Millek, a stylist at the salon. “There’s already so much that families need to buy to get ready for the school year.”

Millek said the cuts are not just for kids though. Teachers who might be on a tight budget and parents are welcome, too.

“We just don’t want to see our regular customers show up because we know they can afford it,” Millek laughed. “We aren’t going to turn anyone away, but it’s really focused on families in need.”

Millek said four stylists will be on duty and cuts will be on a first come, first served basis.

“We’re just doing cuts and a shampoo if necessary,” she added. “We won’t be doing styling or blow drying so that we can get as many people done as possible. If we get a really big turnout, we’ll be able to give people a time frame to come back so they won’t have to sit and wait too long.”

Millek said the idea came up during a discussion at the salon about recent tragedies in the news.

“With all the negative stuff going on in the world we wanted to do something to give back to the community,” she said. “We started talking and this came up and everyone said yes right away.”
