Planning and Zoning votes against ordinance changes

Applause filled the courtroom at the county courthouse in Pembroke Thursday evening as the Bryan County Planning and Zoning Commission voted not to recommend changes to the county’s waste management district ordinance submitted by Pooler-based Atlantic Waste Services.

Atlantic Waste Services, who has proposed a 268-acre landfill in the Black Creek area, submitted the ordinance changes due to language in the current ordinance that prohibits a landfill from being built.

But the Planning and Zoning Commission is only a recommending body. The final approval or disapproval will come from the county commissioners.

The matter is scheduled for a public hearing and first reading at the commissioner’s regular monthly meeting Nov. 15 at the Dixie Harn Community Center in Pembroke, and a second reading and vote Dec. 13.
